Five Types of Massages

Do you know which type of massage to request for what ails you? Depending on the type of massage you receive, you can experience relaxation, stress reduction or pain relief. However, you might leave disappointed if you request the wrong type of massage for what you are wanting. Below is a list of five types of massage to help you choose the best one to fit your needs.

1. Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage is a gentle relaxing massage using long gliding strokes. The pressure used is light to medium. This is best for when you just want to relax your body and mind. You might even get sleepy and drift off to a much-needed nap. This is usually the type of massage you get on a vacation or in a spa. Aromatherapy is commonly used to further your relaxation.

2. Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage uses slow deep strokes to help relieve tense muscles and tension knots that can develop in a muscle. The pressure used will be firm to deep in order to get to the deeper layers of connective tissue and muscles. This massage is perfect if you have a sports injury or chronic aches and pains. Make sure to communicate with your massage therapist if the pressure used is too much or not enough.

3. Trigger Point Massage

A trigger point massage can be on its own or combined with a deep tissue massage. The massage therapist will use firm to deep pressure on a trigger point or knot. Pressure is held for a few minutes until the knot releases or melts away. The trigger point will be tender to the touch and can refer to pain in other parts of your body. You should feel comfortable communicating with your massage therapist if the pressure used is too painful.

4. Sports Massage

A true sports massage happens at the location of a sporting event like a running or cycling marathon. You’d get a quick sports massage before the race and directly after. For this type of massage, you are clothed and the massage therapist uses deep tissue, compression and stretching. Sports massage is usually mistaken for deep tissue or trigger point.

5. Myofascial Release

Myofascial release therapy is different from massage. As massage deals with the manipulation of soft tissue, myofascial release focuses on stretching the connective tissue that causes muscle restriction. This therapy uses sustained yet light pressure on an area for a few minutes until the adhesion or restricted area loosens. Depending on the massage therapist, the session can be done clothed or unclothed and draped properly.

There are so many more kinds of massages out there but this list of five types of massages should get you started. Always feel free to ask questions when scheduling your appointment to ensure you are going to receive the best massage for the issue you are experiencing.
